Selling the Details
Dear Pat,
Selling the Details
It is the little things–both positive and negative–that can make a big difference to prospective buyers. Pay close attention to detail when you prepare your home to sell. Before you list your home, go through the house with a careful eye. Fix any loose door knobs, popped screen doors, and loose grout around the tub and shower. A coat of fresh paint can work wonders to dress up a house. Wash the windows, hang a healthy plant from the bathroom skylight, and clean out the closets. Arrange the furniture to make the room look larger. If the rooms look cluttered, put your extra furniture into storage. You can brighten up a room by increasing the wattage of the light bulbs. Going the extra mile to showcase your home will pay significant dividends when it’s time to show it to buyers.
Barry,
I have one question, what about pictures on the walls. We have a lot of pictures on the walls and my husband thinks it looks better to leave them there while showing the house. I say we should take them down. Please advise us.
Hello Pat,
It’s hard to answer without taking a lot into consideration so let me give you some general guidelines. Personal photos should definitely come down. Pictures or paintings are okay up to a point. If you feel there are a lot, then that probably is too much. If it is a small room, a lot of pictures can make the room appear smaller and that is definitely a no no. In a large room you must have pictures or some form of interest on the walls. You never want blank walls unless there is a lot of interest created by architectural features like heavy crown and base moulding or panels. I hope this is helpful and let me know if you need anything more specific.
